Hit It Long and Straight: Driving Tips for More Distance and Control

Everyone loves hitting a long drive, but accuracy often takes a hit when we chase extra distance. The good news is, you don’t have to sacrifice control for power. Here are a few driving tips to help you hit the ball farther while keeping it on the fairway.

1. Start with a Balanced Setup
A solid drive begins with a balanced stance. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and distribute your weight evenly. Your ball should be positioned just inside your lead heel to give you enough time to square the clubface at impact. A common mistake is setting up too narrow or too wide, which leads to off-balance swings and inconsistent contact.

2. Increase Clubhead Speed the Right Way
The key to more distance lies in your clubhead speed. But speed without control is useless. Focus on generating speed from your body’s rotation, not from swinging your arms faster. Engage your core and let your shoulders lead the way. A smooth tempo will produce more consistent power than a rushed swing.

3. Stay Relaxed, Not Tense
Tension is the enemy of a good swing. It’s easy to grip the club too tightly when you want to smash the ball, but this actually restricts your movement. Keep your grip firm but relaxed, allowing your wrists and arms to move freely through the ball. This will help you maintain control while adding distance.

4. Nail Your Follow-Through
A strong finish often leads to a strong shot. Make sure your follow-through is smooth and complete. Many golfers stop their swing right after impact, but continuing the motion encourages a more consistent strike and better accuracy. Finish with your chest facing the target and your weight on your lead foot.

5. Practice with Intent
When practicing driving, focus on hitting fairway targets rather than just launching the ball as far as possible. This will train you to stay controlled even when you go for extra distance. Over time, you’ll naturally build a more reliable, powerful drive that stays in play.

By following these tips, you’ll find that balance between distance and control, giving you the best chance for success off the tee.
