Mastering Lag Putting: How to Reduce Three-Putts

Lag putting is an essential skill that can help you avoid dreaded three-putts and lower your overall score. Instead of trying to sink long putts, the goal is to get the ball close enough for an easy second putt. Here’s how you can master lag putting and save strokes on the green.

Focus on Distance Control

The key to effective lag putting is controlling your distance. Practice hitting putts of varying lengths, focusing on the speed rather than the direction. Use drills where you aim to stop the ball within a 3-foot circle around the hole. A consistent stroke and feel for the green speed are crucial for success.

Read the Green Properly

Lag putting requires a good understanding of green slopes and breaks. Take your time to read the line, even if you’re not aiming directly for the hole. Look for subtle inclines or downhill slopes that can affect your ball’s speed and direction. A good read will help you gauge how hard to hit the ball.

Develop a Smooth Putting Stroke

A smooth, consistent putting stroke is vital for controlling your lag putts. Avoid jerky movements or trying to force the ball. Instead, focus on a pendulum-like motion with your shoulders and arms. A relaxed grip and steady rhythm will help you maintain control over longer putts.

Use Visualization Techniques

Before you putt, visualize the ball’s path and where it will stop. Imagine a target area near the hole, rather than focusing solely on sinking the putt. Visualization helps you align your body and build confidence in your stroke.

Practice Long Putts Regularly

Many golfers neglect practicing long putts during their training sessions. Spend at least 10-15 minutes on the practice green focusing exclusively on lag putts. The more comfortable you become with these longer distances, the more likely you are to avoid three-putts during your round.

Mastering lag putting takes time and effort, but it’s a skill that pays off significantly on the course. By focusing on distance control, green reading, and practice, you’ll see immediate improvements in your putting performance.
