Pre-Round Warm-Up: How to Prepare for a Great Game

A proper pre-round warm-up can set the tone for a successful day on the golf course. Skipping or rushing your warm-up can leave you unprepared and out of rhythm. Here’s how to warm up effectively and get ready to play your best.

Arrive Early

Give yourself plenty of time before your tee time to warm up. Rushing straight from your car to the first tee can result in a shaky start. Arriving at least 30-45 minutes early allows you to relax, stretch, and practice without feeling rushed.

Start with Stretching

Begin your warm-up with dynamic stretches to loosen your muscles and increase flexibility. Focus on key areas like your shoulders, hips, and lower back. Simple exercises like torso twists, shoulder rolls, and leg swings can help you prepare for the rotational movements of your swing.

Practice Your Short Game First

Spend the first part of your warm-up on the putting green and chipping area. This helps you get a feel for the green speed and build confidence in your short game. Start with short putts, gradually working up to longer ones. For chipping, practice from various lies to simulate real course conditions.

Hit a Range of Clubs

On the driving range, start with your wedges and work your way up to longer clubs. This gradual progression helps you establish rhythm and build confidence. Focus on making smooth, controlled swings rather than trying to hit full power immediately.

Visualize the First Hole

Before heading to the first tee, take a moment to visualize your opening shot. Picture the fairway and imagine your ball flight. This mental preparation can help you start your round with a positive mindset and reduce first-tee nerves.

A proper warm-up isn’t just about hitting balls; it’s about preparing your body, mind, and swing for the round ahead. By incorporating these tips, you’ll step onto the first tee feeling ready to play your best.
